10:40 am - Festivities
|
After an excellent weekend at imagisme 's wedding, I am again realizing how spread out everyone has gotten. Of the old Chadbourne crew, we now live in 7 different states by my count, and I may even be forgetting one or two. Its amazing to think that it was 11 years ago when I was walking onto the fourth floor for the first time, and just getting to know everyone. Now we have years of history together, and years apart as well- new jobs, new families, new relationships, new hobbies. Nice to know that despite this, the old easy familiarity is still there.
I'm still not a large internet presence- not on Facebook or Myspace, etc. But I'll always be "findable" here, and on Xbox Live as well for those gamers out there- handle Travisfisher13 (pretty easy to remember). So here's hoping that we can manage to keep these frail connections going for a little bit longer :-). Take care of yourselves.

I don't get to watch to many movies anymore. But Alexa and the kids are visiting my in-laws (I've got a conference this weekend for those of us who are going to be chief residents) so I rented The Wrestler, and just got done watching it. My new favorite movie- its like Rourke isn't even acting. And its a rare movie that shows the amount of pain that people can inflict on each other without being evil- just deeply, deeply flawed. Highly recommended, if any of you haven't seen it.

 | MY SOOOOOON!
The obligatory "Prince of Thieves" line out of the way, let me introduce all of you to Shane Mitchell, born 11/13/08 at 18.5 inches and 6lb 12oz. He was just about 1 hour old in this picture, and mom and baby are home now and doing well. I will now continue my almost never posting, occasionally commenting, mostly lurking livejournal existence. But for what its worth, I'm glad you guys are all still out there, and from what I've read, largely doing well. Take care of yourselves. |

11:04 am - Gitmo review
|
I was just reading the Reuters new piece on the U.S. Supreme Court voting 5-4 to allow a limited review of the detention of Gitmo detainees. I thought it was very interesting that "strict constructionist" Scalia read this line from his dissenting opinion-
"Today, for the first time in our nation's history, the court confers a constitutional right to habeas corpus on alien enemies detained abroad by our military forces in the course of an ongoing war," Scalia said. (For him and his fellows, this is bad.)
To me, this sums up the whole difficulty with that school of thought (aside from the fact that virtually no one applies it universally, even Scalia.). Its not that he's technically wrong. But it also identifies the GIANT loophole that the Bush administration is exploiting. Hold them on U.S. soil, they are covered by the constitution (a few people would argue that, but I think its pretty clear.) Hold them on the battlefield, and they are prisoners-of-war and covered under the Geneva Convention (again, pretty generally excepted.) Now, hold them on a U.S. military installation on non-U.S. soil, but away from the battlefield, and you found legal limbo. And yet, as a constructionist, you say that you don't care about legal ideals, or intent, or that fact that it is a loophole. All that matters is that the written letter of the law is being followed, as written by guys centuries ago who couldn't possibly have predicted this event. EVEN THOUGH those guys took pains to include their legal ideals in the written document itself.
Does a certain former 4th floor guy want to help explain this to me, or anyone else know enough about the law to figure out how the constructionists would support their view in this situation? Cause I'm stumped.

9:08 pm - Politicows
|
I was visiting my parents over the weekend, and finally cleaned out the last laundry basket of odds and ends from my old room (I had cleaned the majority out 5 years ago, but those last bits just lingered on.) I came across something that amused me as a teenager, and like Monty Python and fart jokes, it holds up very well.
Politicows A Bovine Guide to Political Theory Feudalism: You have two cows. Your lord takes some of the milk. Totalitarianism: You have two cows. Th government takes them and denies they ever existed. Milk is banned. Dictatorship: you have two cows. The government takes both and shoots you. Fascism: You have two cows. The government takes both, hires you to take care of them, and sells you the milk. Pure communism: You have two cows. Your neighbors help you take care of them, and you all share the milk. Russian communism: You have two cows. You have to take care of them, but the government takes all the milk. Pure socialism: You have two cows. The government takes them and puts them in a barn with everyone else's cows. You have to take care of all the cows. The government gives you as much milk as you need. Bureaucratic socialism: You have two cows. The government takes them and puts them in a barn with everyone else's cows. They are cared for by ex-chicken farmers. You have to take care of the chickens the government took from the chicken farmers. The government gives you as much milk and as many eggs as the regulations say you should need. Pure democracy: You have two cows. Your neighbors decide who gets the milk. Representative democracy: You have two cows. Your neighbors pick someone to tell you who gets the milk. American democracy: The government promises to give you two cows if you vote fro it. after the election, the president is impeached fro speculating in cow futures. New Dealism: You have two cows, you shoot one, milk the other and pour the milk down the drain. Capitalism: You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull. Hong Kong Capitalism: You have two cows. You sell three of them to your publicly listed company, usng letters of credit opened buy your brother-in-law at the bank, then execute a debt-equity swap so that you get all four cows back, with a tax deduction for keeping five cows. The milk rights of six cows are transferred via a Panamanian intermediary to a Cayman Islands company secretly owned by the majority shareholder, who sells the rights to all seven cows' milk back to the listed company. The annual report says that the company owns eight cows, with an option on one more. Meanwhile, you kill the two cows because the feng shui is bad. Anarchism: You have two cows. Either you sell the milk at a fair price or you neighbors try to kill you and take the cows. Surrealism: You have two giraffes. The government requires you to take harmonica lessons.

7:39 pm - Psych story

Hey all! Wanted to put up a little story I wrote, and hopefully will get published in one of the psych magazines. I'm stating in order to fend off any "wow, that is so corny" statements. However, any help on grammar or structure would be greatly appreciated, as the majority of you are FAR more adept with the English language than the science major.

6:17 pm - Fundraising
|
I feel weird about doing this, because like any good Midwesterner, I don't like talking about money. However, I am participating in a fundraising walk for a group called NAMI (National Allience for the Mental Ill), and I would appreciate any donations to the cause. They are a great group that are made up off and try to help other families and pts suffering from mental illness, and really step up to plug the gaps that we as psychiatrists can't fill. There is a website for online donations at www.nami.org/namiwalks07/GRM/travisfisher So, there's my pitch. I'm going to go shower now.

4:59 pm - Day off!
|
|
Ah, the joys of having a day off, when you get so few of them. Only 4 days off in a month gets a little trying, at least for me. So, getting right to getting you all caught up....
My first 2 months of residency have been busy, but good. I started out in the ER, and then to Internal Medicine, next month I move to Family Practice, and then FINALLY I get to do some Psychiatry- 3 straight months at the VA locked wards, baby. Nothing beats crazy guys who still remember the days when they were trained and allowed to kill (good times......) Seriously though, I'm looking forward to starting actually working in the specialty I want to work in, you know?
In far more important news, my personal life is going to be getting more interesting very shortly. Why, you ask? Well, Alexa is currently 3 mths pregnant, and our baby is due on Feb. 28th. (A brief moment for all the girls to squeal unintelligably.) So, things are about to change radically around our little 2 bedroom condo. We are very excited, and I will post the first ultrasound soon if I can get it scanned and shrunk down sufficiently. If keeping you informed about baby-ness doesn't finally kick my butt into regular post-age, I don't know what will. Oh, and that whole "pregnant women have weird cravings" business? Not so, at least not around here. Her existing cravings (chocolate, ice cream, and chocolate ice cream) have simply amplified to the point that the corner grocery store see my wife more than I do (well, not really, but you get the point.)
Hope everyone is doing well!

10:20 pm - Another overdue post
|
Seriously, I'm like the Pony Express of LiveJournal here. I barely post here, and what do my med school classmates (well, former med school classmates, but who is worried about semantics?) decide? That having MySpace pages would be a great way to stay in touch. Also troll for jailbait, but that's another discussion. Seriously though, Its deja vu all over again (one of my favorite phrases). Four years ago, I parted ways with some truely fantastic people, and while we have tried to stay in tough, and still see each other on occation, it isn't the way it was, you know? I'm quietly preparing for the same to happen with my former med school classmates, but since it hasn't yet, I'm enjoying the last bits of time we have before they have all moved to various corners of the country.
In happy news, Alexa and I had a beautiful wedding 3 weeks ago, and it was GREAT to see some people again, even if I wasn't able to really hang out with them (something about the groom having "responsibilities" or such.). If anyone wants pictures, my photographer has them all online at Pictage, so drop me a line and I can send you the password to get a look at them. We took our honeymoon to Hawaii, and got back about a week and a half ago. It was fantastic- a jaw-droppingly gourgous place to be. I would love to live there, but it would take a while to get used to everything being so expensive. Seriously, milk was $8.09 a gallon. The "paradise tax", the locals call it. When you have to ship in essentially all of your food (other than seafood), prices reflect it. Most of our photos are digital, but I don't currently have any service to post them online. Anyone have any suggestions for a site that is user-friendly, and cheap?

12:38 pm - My New Life
|
And it really is, strangely.
Yesterday was a HUGE day in the life of any medical student, called Match Day. For any of you that don't know, Match day is basically a coordinated acceptance letter day when all senior medical students in the country find out which residency program has accepted them (Residency= training after med school, like apprenticeship, where you are an MD but making about 1/3 of your future salary, and are still supervised by an experienced MD). So, all 200 of my classmates and I crowd into one of the big lecture halls at school, and are given white envelopes with our locations on them. And mine said....
I'm going to be a psychiatrist in Milwaukee, MY TOP CHOICE! (Life alteration 1)
So it all kicks off now. Now that I know where I'm going to be the next 4 years, Alexa and I are buying a condo south of town, and will be closing at the end of the month. (Life alteration 2)
Then, on May 19th, I will officially graduate from medical school.
On May 28th, Alexa and I will be getting married! Honeymoon is planned for Kauai, in Hawaii. (life alteration #3).
So, in the span of 2 1/2 months, I will go from being a broke, shiftless single student to a married, home-owning psychiatrist. With a cat, if Alexa has her way :-) And we are planning to start a family pretty much right away, so who knows? It might not be long before there are mini monkey boys/girls bombing around my house.
Wild, huh? I think I'm ready for all this, but damn.

10:05 am - WTF?
|
I don't get it. Roberts for Chief Justice? I mean, o.k., he's a young conservative, and Bush wants a conservative legacy. But went from being a slam dunk nomination (really, he's sqeaky clean) to handing the Democrats and on the fence republicans (or right wingers who would rather have Scalia) the "he doesn't have the experience" argument. *Head explodes* Anyone see any logic in this at all?

So, no election diatribe from me. I'll admit that I was surprised to see the Republicans gain ground, but I'm not in the group that thinks it was a sign of Armagedon either. I'm with Millenia- it was 51% to 48% nationwide, and that is hardly resounding support of Bush. If people keep an eye on, and maintain a part in the process, we'll be o.k. Oh, and props again to Millenia- that was a freaking SCARY website. It reminds me again that I have to work harder not to let the "religious" right speak for all of us more inclusive, and generally less vocal, folks.

Thanks for all the well-wishing, everyone- and yes, I hope you guys get a chance to meet her soon, hopefully New Years, for all those interested in continuing our fledgling tradition. Unfortunately, there are no merry-go-rounds in Children's hospital, though there are video games in everyroom and these cool little big wheel type cars they get to zip around in.

8:45 pm - A long overdue post......with big news!
|
|
So, its been over two months since I posted anything, which is quite neglectful of me, now isn't it? I thought I would make up for that by giving you all some very big news...
I'm engaged!
I proposed to Alexa on Sunday night, and she said yes (as I figured she would, or I wouldn't have asked :-). So, needless to say, I'm very excited. We won't be getting married until after my fourth year, so another year and a half. I'll keep you guys in the loop. Anyway, I'll be moving in about a month to a bigger place, when she gets a job here in Milwaukee. We've been doing some apartment shopping, so hopefully we get the place that I've been looking at.
Outside of that, my life is the same old same old of a med student- I'm doing my pediatric rotation right now, and its a lot of fun. I was working in Children's hospital last month, and this month I'm working at an outpatient clinic, which I really like. We see a lot of patients in a day, the pace is quick, and you get that whole "instant satisfaction" thing- see problem, fix it, everyone goes home happy.
I don't really know what else to say, so if I left out some glaringly obvious detail, just ask!
